Abstract :
The author discusses the use of critical self-evaluation of performance as a stimulus for excellence. Self-evaluation inherently provides acceptance and ownership of a problem, thereby motivating change. Some of the key elements of self-evaluation are discussed, such as unbiased observations and appropriate performance standards. As circumstances change, an ongoing self-appraisal approach provides continuing feedback to maintain and further excellence. Two examples of critical self-evaluation in use at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) are discussed-an individual application called Walking Your Spaces, in which the manager or supervisor actually goes to the area where his overseen work is going on, to observe and communicate with employees and a group application, the Nuclear Manager´s Review Group.<>
