Abstract
Free-space optical communication at 10 bits/photon and 5 bits/sec-Hz requires hundreds to thousands of spatial modes. This paper compares turbulence-induced crosstalk for such systems using focused-beam, Hermite-Gaussian, or Laguerre-Gaussian modes.
