Abstract
The possibility of an in-service optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR), for the supervision of an amplified WDM system is investigated. With minor modifications on the erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA) architecture and appropriate arrangement on the direction of the injected OTDR pulse, in-service monitoring of the WDM system can be achieved at up to 400 km, with negligible penalties on the transmitted data.
