This study sampled freshman students in commercial design from a certain polytechnic university in central Taiwan, and incorporated the creative composition of points, lines, and planes into their basic design course. This study demonstrated to students design principles through with real examples, and then asked students to create hand-drawn designs. The lessons were discussion-oriented, and each design was discussed and improved. After that, the students were asked to orally present on the creative composition. Results of this study show that, regardless of how advanced technology was, hand-drawing skill was still a vital parts of the design industry and cannot be replaced by computer drafting. In addition, it is possible to stimulate creativity in point-line-plane composition through discussions and oral presentations, thereby increasing the effectiveness and quality in both teaching and learning.
