Abstract
One of the current challenges in numerical dosimetry is to accurately model commercial mobile phones for SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) calculations. The complexity of computer-aided design (CAD) phone models does not allow straightforward numerical simulations. A pre-requisite is to develop a simplified but nonetheless accurate numerical equivalent of the original CAD model. An understanding of the electromagnetic near-field contribution of the different components of the handset is needed to produce the simplified model. A PIFA (planar inverted-F antenna)-based commercial mobile phone is herein investigated both numerically and experimentally to evaluate the electromagnetic importance of typical components of the mobile phone.
