Abstract
The elastic properties of functionally gradient materials are investigated. The materials are in the form of a plate, and they gradually change the composition and characteristics from one side to the other, e.g., from ceramic to metal. A specimen was cross-sectioned, and the variation of the leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity along the thickness of the plate was measured by an ultrasonic microspectrometer. The profile of the LSAW velocity is continuous rather than stepwise. A large residual stress is suspected, because the profile of the materials content exhibits a stepwise variation and anisotropy of the LSAW velocity is observed
