Abstract :
ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is expected to play a key role in expanding the network capabilities toward broadband ISDN (integrated services digital network). The authors propose a concept of ATMization as the next evolution step coming after digitalization. Some ATMization scenarios are discussed. For rapid and economical expansion of B-ISDN, internal network ATMization keeping the existing user-network interface and ATMization on an end-to-end basis should proceed in parallel. The possibility of access network ATMization in conjunction with fiber-optic local system is studied in some detail. Modules and their functions which are required for ATMization are clarified from the service integration point of view
