Dichotomous choice and open-ended are two commonly used methods in contingent valuation (CVM). In this paper, both of the methods were used to elicit the farmer´s willingness to pay (WTP) for the irrigation water in Zhangye district, northwest China. We found the dichotomous choice yield higher WTP estimate than open-ended, but the difference is small, which argues for the convergent validity of the valuation exercise. Also, we found there may be yea-saying in dichotomous choice at lower bids, though there is no distinct difference in respondent behavior between the two elicitation methods.
