Abstract
This paper uses Chinese industrial data during 1998- 2005 to assess the effect of trade on the environment. The results show: Firstly, trade liberalization made Chinese industrial sectors specialize in the cleaner industries, which reduced pollution emission; Secondly, trade enabled China to obtain the best pollution abatement technology, which dropped the industrial pollution intensity; Thirdly, the scale effect of trade on the environment is negative and offsets the above environmental gains, so the total effect of trade on the environment is negative.
