Abstract :
The authors describe the laying and test results of the KDD (Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co.) portion of the Third Transpacific Submarine Cable System (TPC-3), which is the first long-haul optical-fiber undersea cable in the Pacific. The system is an OS-280M optical-fiber submarine cable system, which operates at a 1.3-μm wavelength and has two fiber pairs of 280 Mb/s. The total cable length of the KDD portion of the TPC-3 is approximately 4000 km, and there are 73 repeaters including one deep-sea branching unit. Issues discussed are system design, integration development, the transmission line model and level diagram, and system margin. The successful operation of the integrated system is reported
