  • Abstract
The constructed wetlands (CWs ) with a layer of ceramsite at the bottom as well as the top will improve the efficiency in disposing wastewater. The experiment simulates the vertical flow constructed wetland, using plastic pails to plant reeds. There are two CWs, of which No. 1 uses ceramsite and grits as its filler, while No. 2 uses only grits. The system adopts discontinuous dosing pattern, adding the simulated domestic wastewater into the pails from the top every day at the same hour. The results show that the removal rates of COD, NH4-N and TP in No. 1 are higher than that in No. 2 with different hydraulic loads (from 2.53 cm/d to 6.74 cm/d) . And the removal rates of COD, NH4-N and TP in No. 1 are more than 83.33%, 98.21% and 98.98% respectively. It is an effective way to construct wetlands by adding ceramsite.
