Abstract
The results of a research and development effort designed to extend the bandwidth limitation of quartz-coupled resonator filters beyond a half percent are reported. The theoretical operation and design of coupled resonator filters are discussed from both a time-domain and frequency-domain point of view, with special attention devoted to the requirements for maximizing the filter bandwidth. Several devices extending over a range of frequencies are analyzed with a coupling of modes model, and then fabricated on rotated Y-cut quartz utilizing the X-propagating surface acoustic wave. Experimental and theoretical results are presented in both the time and frequency domain for filters with bandwidths up to 0.6%
