Abstract :
Wavelet transforms have been applied in image and video compression for the last decade. It decomposes the image into several frequency subbands. It is profitable to combine the variable blocksize vector quantization with wavelet transform coding since there are lots of zeros in the higher frequency subbands. In this paper, we propose an image compression method by applying the variable blocksize vector quantization with optimal quadtree segmentation to the wavelet transform domain of an image. From our simulation results, we can see that the reconstructed images do not show visual difference from the original image at high compression ratio
