Abstract :
Image coding is one of the most important applications of wavelets. There has been increasing number of reports each year since the late 1980´s on the design of new wavelet coders and variations to existing ones. In this paper several wavelet-based coders are compared in their performance with still images. The aim of this work is to choose a suitable wavelet coder for intraframe coding that is needed for video compression. Two image quality metrics were used in the comparative study: the compression ratio and the conventional distortion measure, peak signal-to-noise ratio. Also, the effects of different wavelet filters are assessed. The work also aims to establish a suitable computer measure to assess the reconstructed image
