Abstract
This paper analyses feasible slot and pole number combinations for multiplex 2-phase and 3-phase fault-tolerant permanent-magnet machines and evaluates their relative merits via a design case study. An effective winding short-circuit detection technique based on search coils wound around the stator teeth is also presented, and its performance is assessed. It is shown that the proposed detection technique can reliably detect any type of short-circuit fault under all load conditions.
