Abstract :
Her Majesty´s Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) is responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste in England and Wales under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA 93). The Inspectorate will retain this responsibility until 1 April 1996, when it will be merged into the Environment Agency, newly-formed under the Environment Act 1995. HMIP´s various regulatory responsibilities will then be taken over by the Agency. Disposal of radioactive waste includes both the discharge of liquid and gaseous waste and the disposal of solid waste. This paper is concerned mainly with solid radioactive waste, although it includes some discussion of liquid and gaseous waste to provide a more general perspective
