Abstract :
A series of experiments conducted at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in November 1991, to evaluate the quality of HDTV that was digitized, compressed to 45 Mb/s, and transmitted through the NASA Communications Network (NASCOM), is described. The experiments included back-to-back bench tests of the Alcatel Telettra 45 Mb/s high-definition coder/decoder (codec) with motion compensation, followed by data transmission through the NASA space shuttle Orbiter communication simulator, and, finally, transmission through the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Scientific System (TDRSS). The quality of the resultant HDTV signal was excellent
