Abstract
The use of radio in the local access network, of which the local loop is but one example, has been developed in the UK following the 1984 Telecoms Act which created the Telecoms Duopoly and the 1991 “Review ofthe Duopoly” which created the explosion in telecoms liberalisation. The applications in which radio is now playing a part in these access situations is illustrated; a typical example of a local access network is shown. It is shown that radio can fulfil the connection from the public network STM-1 lowest level ring structure, connect the local switch to a cellular base station, connect a base station to MSC and provide the distribution network infrastructure; finally its role in the local loop can connect the subscriber to the distribution point of the network
