Title :
Third generation personal communications
Abstract :
There are two system concepts for third generation mobile communications currently being developed and standardised in Europe. They are: the Third Generation Mobile System (TGMS), referred to as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) in Europe and Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunications System (FPLMTS) world-wide, and Mobile Broadband System (MBS). UMTS is intended to provide a wide range of mobile Services with up to 2 Mb/s to the user. MBS is aimed at providings range of broadband services with transmission capabilities of up to 155 Mb/s. This paper describes the main requirements and some of the technical aspects of the two systems. It also discusses two different approaches towards meeting the full requirements of UMTS (the author´s point of view).
