Abstract :
A methodology for evaluating network designs based on cost and on the results of survivability risk analysis (SRA), which quantifies the conditional survivability under hub failure, loss of traffic, and loss of connectivity of network designs, is presented. It is illustrated by a case study. Interoffice (IOF) and feeder hub-based and self-healing ring SONET architectures are considered. Each architecture is applied in turn to the same testbed network. The resulting network designs are compared in terms of the cost of purchasing and installing equipment and the results of the SRA. The set of admissible (acceptable) architectures for the IOF and feeder cases is identified, as well as when each of the admissible architectures should be used
