Abstract :
Devices that interconnect LANs on which the traffic process may be characterized as alternating between trains of packets and idle periods (e.g., token ring, token bus, FDDI, DQDB) are considered. Assuming that the probability that a packet is part of the internetwork traffic is independent of all other packets, the input packet process to the internetwork device, is characterized as an alternating renewal process of trains of packets and idle times. This is the first step in completely characterizing the packet routing through a bridge in an internetworked LAN environment
