Abstract
The advantages that optical interconnections within synchronous optical network (SONET) and synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) transmission terminals offer users are discussed. The advantages include flexible serving arrangements, electromagnetic compatibility with other equipment, less bulk, fault-free in-service upgrades, and predictable transmission quality. The evolution of optical interconnection in transmission terminals, advantages of shelf-to-shelf optical interconnection and architectures, technologies, and protocols for port-to-fabric interconnection are discussed
