Abstract :
The architecture of the Fujitsu Lightwave Multiplexer 6 (FLM6), a synchronous-optical-network- (SONET-) based 6.3-Mb/s multiplexer designed for the North American market is discussed. The FLM6 provides a cost-effective way of extending low-bit-rate optical services from an add/drop multiplexer to customer premises. Because FLM6 allows the network provider to economically justify fiber placement to more customer premise locations, the network can be ready to serve these locations with higher bandwidth services as the need arises. It also satisfies network demands in the business loop market by delivering DS1 services
