Abstract :
This paper presents a new technique for probing and characterising HF channels. A probe of less than five seconds is used to assess the characteristics of a 3 kHz channel, and thereby to establish the suitability of several possible waveforms. The probing cycle is repeated on the set of available channels, thus building up a database to sustain the automatic channel selection (ACS) and automatic link establishment (ALE) functions of the NATO automatic radio control system (ARCS). This study has confirmed the feasibility of extracting channel characteristics on severely disturbed ionospheric paths using a short probe that combines synchronisation, channel estimation and data transmission
