Abstract :
Carbon nanofiber (CNF) films were synthesized using electroplated Ni catalysts on Au buffer layer. The maximum emission current was measured to be 3.67 mA at an electric field of 12.5 V/μm from the area of 4.9×10-3 cm2, which correspond to the very high emission current density of 750 mA/cm2. The peculiar hysteresis in emission currents corresponding to anode-voltage ramping direction leads to the proposal that the observed emission behavior of CNFs stemmed from the adsorption and desorption of adsorbates during emission measurements. Field-emission measurements with various voltage-sweep speed and time evolution supported the picture of adsorbate-related emission.
