Abstract :
Work on the UK´s first trials of metropolitan area network (MAN) technology, carried out during 1992, is described. The MAN technology is being used to try a new BT high-speed data service offering known as the switched high-speed data service (SHDS), which is similar to the switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) defined by Bellcore. After a brief background on the technology and the trial service offering, the trial is discussed in detail, including its aims and objectives, the London network, testing, the results gained, and the network management systems used. An outline of the LAN-to-MAN interconnection issues and the combination of novel resilience and reliability features employed are discussed
