Abstract :
In massive data communication networks, it is common to find many thousands of nodes with a wide mix of hardware, software, and communication protocol architectures. It is shown that the most promising approach to managing these networks is being standardized by ISO/IEC for open systems management. The technical feasibility, economic provisioning, and usability of OSI systems management are discussed. Two alternatives for usable network management infrastructures are presented, and their characteristics are described
