Abstract
Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) signaling protocols and the evolution from one signaling system to another is treated. Release 1 B-ISDN will differ from narrowband ISDN (N-ISDN) in its use of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), but it will offer the same kind of services. For this reason, Release 1 signaling protocols will be derived from N-ISDN protocols. B-ISDN of successive Releases will be supported by the same transport technique as Release 1, but really innovative concepts and services will be introduced; as an example, call and bearer controls will be separated and multiconnection/multiparty calls will be supported. Solutions to the problem of reuse and compatibility of protocols are discussed
