Abstract
The broadband access systems for residential and small business users being developed within the RACE 2024 project is described. The system developed transmits asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells over a passive optical network (PON) at 622 MB/s using time division multiplexing/time division multiple access (TDM/TDMA) techniques. The use of a medium access control algorithm allows dynamic bandwidth allocation between the 32 subscriber terminations. A techno-economic comparison between the system being implemented and alternative systems is described and preliminary results of the comparison given
