Abstract
Methods and tools for customizing a network surveillance knowledge base are described. An overview of the network surveillance expert system is presented. The central role of the knowledge base is demonstrated. A special, English-like language in which the knowledge about network problems is encoded into problem scripts-modules of the knowledge base is described. Methods for modifying and creating problem scripts are discussed. The verification methods at three levels are introduced. The process of activating tested modules of the knowledge base in the online expert system is illustrated. The benefits of customizing network surveillance expert systems are summarized
