Abstract
The principles behind the new ETSI V5 interface are introduced. The model of the access network appropriate to the V5 interface is described, taking account of the role of the access network and the services which the V5 interface supports. The approach to (ISDN) signaling and its rationale are given, and the public switched telephone network (PSTN) signaling problem and its solution are described. The remainder of the protocol consists of operational messages which go beyond basic call control. Some of the implications for Q interface of an access network resulting from the V5 specification are described. The outlook for the V5 interface and its implications over the next few years are given
