Abstract :
The characteristics of transmission lines containing Er-doped fiber amplifier repeaters (or IR transmission lines) are insensitive to transmission bit rate. These IR transmission lines will enable terrestrial trunk transmission systems to be economical and flexible. The design of Er-doped fiber amplifier repeaters for intensity modulation and direct detection terrestrial transmission systems is described. Supervision and optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) schemes for 1R transmission lines are also discussed. A 10-Gb/s transmission field experiment with Er-doped fiber amplifier repeaters has demonstrated their practicality
