Abstract
Recent high-speed optical soliton communication experiments that utilize diode laser pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and dispersion-shifted transmission fiber are discussed. The experiments include wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) soliton transmission over trans-Pacific distances, and single-channel, 32-Gb/s transmission over 90 km. At such high speeds, conventional techniques are presently not capable of extracting the data. All-optical techniques capable of retrieving ultra-high-speed (>64-Gb/s) data are therefore also discussed. In addition, some limits for WDM and ultra-high-speed soliton communications are addressed
