Abstract :
Trellis-coded Stokes parameter modulation in coherent optical communications whose signal symbols are represented by the points on the Poincare sphere are presented. The probability density function of received Stokes parameter and the maximum likelihood metric in the Poincare sphere are derived. To obtain a maximum coding gain, quasi-optimum symbol points are presented. The bit error probability is given theoretically and the effects of phase-noise are also presented. It is clarified that the coding gain for coded 4-SPSK (Stokes parameter modulation) over 2-SPSK with two-state trellis is 3.6 dB, and that trellis coding is effective even in the presence of large effects of phase-noise
