  • Abstract
    The use of linear programming for optimizing the investment and operation of the reactive power allocation in a power system is presented. The approach incorporates decomposition methods for controlling various tap-changing transformers and reactive power injections for minimizing real power losses. Solutions are constrained by limits on bus voltage levels, tap settings, and reactive power flows. The study results in a significant reduction in the number of iterations, computation time, and the memory space required for solving a large-scale network
