Abstract :
Degradation and mineralization of polyacrylamide (PAM) in aqueous solution was studied by using Fe2O3/SiO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst in the presence of H2O2 and UV light. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the catalyst. It was observed that the photo-Fenton degradation of 100 mg/L PAM undergone a faster kinetics than the mineralization, 80% PAM was removed in 120 min and 70% total organic carbons of PAM was eliminated after 180 min in the presence of 1.0 g/L Fe2O3/SiO2 catalyst, 200 mg/L H2O2 and 8 W UV light. In addition, it was also found that H2O2 concentration, UV light intensity, Fe2O3/SiO2 catalyst loading and the initial PAM concentration were the four main factors that could significantly influence the degradation of PAM.
