  • Abstract
It is pointed out that, by the end of this decade, an evolution will occur from today´s intelligent networks to the future knowledge networks. This evolution is driven by advances in switching and transmission technologies as well as by expanded information systems and databases containing detailed information about user needs. Some of the new opportunities projected as emerging in this decade, driven by rapidly emerging customer needs, are discussed. Storeless shopping, image/electronic commerce, telecommuting, custom production/services, networked businesses, and global markets are some of the trends mentioned.<>
