Abstract :
The authors report on a method which uses a series of thin-slice contiguous computed tomography (CT) scans covering the vertebral pedicles to determine the shape and diameter of the pedicular canal. Some preliminary data on pedicle diameter is presented. The information has been useful in surgical planning where mechanical fixation utilizing pedicle screws is anticipated. The diameters measured with this method indicate that similar measurements traditionally made from the cross-sectional images alone overestimate the actual diameter, in some cases by a factor of 2 or 3
