Abstract :
This paper discusses the performance of a grid connected variable speed wind energy conversion system consisting of a wind turbine coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) through a gearbox. The generator output voltage which varies with wind velocity and grid voltage is rectified and fed to a DC/DC chopper. The duty ratio of the chopper is adjusted to extract maximum power from the wind turbine. The maximized power is fed to the local grid at the required voltage and frequency using a PWM inverter. The mathematical model of the wind energy conversion system is developed using MATLAB. Simulation is carried out to identify the optimum duty ratio and modulation index for varying wind velocities and grid voltages. The simulation data are used to design a neuro controller for power optimization.
