Abstract :
The paper presents the results of our performed measurements on the disturbing electromagnetic field associated with the so called Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); the results are synthetically displayed in polar coordinates, as circles with different radii around the active transceiver. Aiming to determine their realistic negative impact on specific medical device, we have proposed and tested a complete protocol, mainly applicable for equipment directly connected with the patient. There are analyzed the main frequency and power characteristics of the disturbances produced by the digital portable DECT phones, with specific focus on the electromagnetically overcrowded environment of an intensive care unit. As illustration purposes of the registered influences was chosen a neonatal mechanical ventilator, due to the great number of vital parameters that must be set and not disturbed. There are issued some recommendations regarding the relative emplacement of the base station the active, cordless receiver and the sensitive device that should be protected.
