Abstract
The light intensity distribution and the illumination uniformity as well as the optical efficiency are the important issues for LED lighting. In this paper, we present a freeform lens design method to optimize the optical performances of the white light LEDs. The surface contour of the freeform lens is determined by the intensity distribution requirement of the LED spot light with uniform illumination. The experimental results show that the optical efficiency of 95.69% is achieved under a beam angle of 30 deg while the LED illumination uniformity can be enhanced from 0.064 to 0.317 as compared to the conventional freeform lenses.
