Abstract :
Describes the development of a 14.0-GHz, 30-W FET combiner/amplifier intended as a replacement for 50-W TWTA (traveling-wave-tube amplifier) used in communication-satellite uplink transmitter applications. The output stage of the amplifier consists of four 8-W power FETs that are combined using a 3D combining circuit known as the spatial field power combiner. The entire amplifier is a self-contained unit with its own heat sink and high velocity blower and a regulatory/sequencing circuitry for FET biasing. The amplifier results presented here show a P/sub sat/=30 W-min, P/sub 1dB/=25 W, an AM/PM conversion=2 degrees /dB max, a noise figure of 4 dB, and a typical two-tone IM/sub 3/=25 dBc with single carrier backed off 6 dB from saturation.<>
