Abstract :
Nonceramic insulators consist of a fiberglass core rod, metal end fittings, and weathershed housing. The weathershed homing is made of a polymeric material. Since the weathershed materials may be subject in service to degradation of aging due to harsh environmental conditions, laboratory tests are used to evaluate their performance. The use of fog chambers is one of the most commonly used laboratory tests. A test program was designed to study the joint effects of fog salinity and pre-deposited contamination on polymer insulators in a fog chamber. The paper reviews the evaluation aspects of test data related to leakage current pulses, cumulative charges and pre-deposit flashover voltages.
