Abstract :
Turbo codes performance improves in correlated Rayleigh fading channels using outer block interleaving, but the drawback is complexity and delay. Choosing inappropriate number of columns can cause errors increase. In this case a reconfigurable outer block interleaver with column number optimised for indoor or low range outdoor operating environments can be useful. Simulation results are demonstrated for the four block interleaver configurations specified for UMTS mobile standard. Using different data rates, constant frame length and SOVA turbo decoding algorithm, the advantages of adapting to an optimum number of columns are discussed. Regarding FER the optimum outer interleaver configuration is nearly the same for both SOVA and log-MAP algorithms, whereas regarding BER and low data rates SOVA requires higher number of columns.
