  • Abstract
Voice over IP (VoIP) has already gained significant popularity as one of the most important services in the Internet. Ability to make calls, which are very cheap or even free of charge, allows this technology to be considered as a possible substitution of the existing telephony. However, the existing way of utilization of this service has one considerable disadvantage preventing global users to shift towards using it. The main obstacle is related to area limitation where the network connection needed for making VoIP-calls is available. The solution of the problem proposed in this paper is to port VoIP-client application to mobile Symbian OS-based platform. This approach declines the limitation related to network access availability and allows to achieve all benefits of mobile telephony and VoIP within the same portable wireless device. Our research work includes a study on how VoIP-client application can be implemented for Symbian OS. In scope of our research work, the most essential parts of the application were designed and implemented to provide primary understanding of VoIP development for Symbian-phones. The development of the application was done by means of S60 public application programming interfaces (APIs), which are available for 3rd party developers.
