Abstract :
The Greater Tehran Area is located at the foot slope area of the Alborz Mountains, This zone is one of high seismic potential with many peculiar active faults. According to historical seismic data, Tehran has suffered from several strong earthquakes. Seismologists believe a strong earthquake will strike Tehran in the near future because the city has not experienced a disastrous earthquake since 1830. This paper aims at using the Iranian TEDES software, a standardized real time and also scenario base quick damage and loss estimation system, and modifying it to suit the typical conditions and parameters of Tehran. The TEDES computes site-specific loss estimations based on ground acceleration and census tracts, buildings, and thus is expected to better perform loss estimations. The main purpose of the TEDES during and post earthquake will provide the disaster headquarters and decision-makers with an estimate of damages, losses, injuries and also evacuees. These vital data could improve the emergency response during post earthquake 72 hours which is called golden time. Further use of the TEDES before the earthquake will provide the Iranian civil protection and decision-makers with indications of the a real spread, extent and type of the expected losses and thus suggest priorities for reinforcing the most vulnerable buildings. Finally an earthquake scenario will be proposed in this paper and TEDES outputs compared with each other achieving a conclusion.
