Abstract
Nowadays public Internet access in residential areas is provided via fixed legacy wired infrastructure. Alternately, this paper analyzes a low cost, easy-to-install 802.11s wireless mesh based solution to ensure the transition to a network operating in a wireless environment. The presented simulations for the considered scenario take into account the quality of service provided to the end consumer, quantified by means of available throughput, packet loss ratio and average end-to-end delay for different types of applications, like VoIP and bursty traffic. The results obtained demonstrate that WMNs in this residential usage scenario can support the two analyzed service types to end consumers.
