Abstract
Lightning is a natural phenomenon that may cause dangerous currents and voltages, resulting injury or even death of human beings and damage to equipment. An effective external protection system against lightning stroke is a must nowadays. This paper describes the principles, realization and maintenance of an external lightning protection system according to the Israeli standard. Moreover, the differences between the Israeli standard and the IEC standard are reviewed and discussed. The origin of these differences is due to the model, which each standard is based on. The TEC is based on the rolling sphere model, while the Israeli standard is based on a wave-pair model derived from the dynamic electromagnetic model based on Maxwell´s equations.
