Abstract :
The paper describes new low frequency throughwall radar-detector aimed at detecting moving people beyond the walls. As a matter of practice, in Russia we are detecting people obscured by thick reinforced concrete or brick walls, composite floors and other types of construction elements providing high loss of EM waves. In these conditions, high-frequency through-wall radar operating at 2 - 5 GHz frequencies and higher, usually fail the detection. For of these conditions, custom-developed through-wall radar has been developed, which uses 400 MHz central frequency. The operating frequency was compromised between the needed pick-up range and carrying weight of the unit. Our through-wall radar-detector RO-400 could effectively detect moving objects beyond reinforced concrete walls up to 60 cm thick at the distance of at least 6 meters. Detection beyond light walls made of drywall or plywood is at least 21 meters. Also, multi-wall detection is possible, i.e. adjacent premises/spaces. Detection is provides within at least 120° sector. The unit could be operated in remotely-operated areas using 20 meters cable or Wi-Fi. The unit provides additional (GPR) mode, which is used to locate improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mines, unexploded munitions, hideouts, etc.
