Abstract :
Transmission line congestion is a critical factor that will affect power system operational cost. With more renewable energy in the future grid and the intermittence of nature, transmission line congestion will be more frequent. Due to the congestion, renewable plant has to curtail some available generation. This paper investigates the use of active transmission line switching operation in power system planning with NERC N-1 reliability requirement for congestion reduction to increase the usage of renewable generation. During line switching, TCSC and energy storage device such as battery are proposed to resolve the potential stability issue. We demonstrate our approach by a simplified WSCC 9 bus system.
